Project #8 Alushapes - Automation 2

This project is offered by Alushapes, an Australian company that carries out custom aluminium extrusion work for the Australian market.

Project Description

In aluminium extrusion, heated aluminium is pressed through specially created dies, which determine the shape of the extrusion as it is pushed through the die. If the die is placed incorrectly in the extruder, the extrusion will not have the desired shape. Dies are expensive to customise and create and they often need to be changed as complex projects may require a number of extrusion shapes.

This is an early stage discovery project seeking AI-enabled operational solutions to automatically count finished extrusion pieces in production stillages, reducing reliance on human labor and minimising errors.

Disciplines, Knowledge and Skill required

Ideally suited for 3rd year students or above from mechatronic, mechanical and software disciplines. Students must have knowledge of image recognition AI solutions, Python, Django and SQL programming tools.

Format and Size

This project would work best in a class that had a range of disciplines (like a core subject).

The industry partner will provide weekly Q & A sessions and possible site or virtual tours.

Deliverables:

Alushapes would expect an engineering report and may be able to be present during a final presentation for help in assessment, though this greatly depends on availability and location of the classes.
